Rupkund Trek

Arrive at Lohajung, the base camp of the Rupkund Trek, located at approximately 7,600 feet. The scenic drive from Kathgodam passes through beautiful mountain roads, rivers, and traditional villages. Upon arrival, trekkers can relax, enjoy the peaceful Himalayan surroundings, and attend a briefing session conducted by trek leaders. The evening is perfect for acclimatization and preparation for the trek ahead. Lohajung offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks and introduces trekkers to the rich Garhwali culture. The trek begins with a descent towards the Neel Ganga River followed by a steep climb through dense oak and rhododendron forests. Trekkers pass through charming mountain trails and traditional Himalayan settlements. The route offers beautiful views of valleys and distant snow-capped peaks. Didna Village is known for its peaceful atmosphere and warm local hospitality. Trekkers can interact with villagers and experience authentic mountain life. Today’s trail leads to the spectacular Ali Bugyal, one of Asia’s largest alpine meadows. The trek passes through dense forests before opening into vast green grasslands surrounded by Himalayan peaks. The panoramic views of Trishul and Nanda Ghunti become more prominent during the journey. The rolling meadows provide an unforgettable trekking experience with fresh mountain air and scenic beauty all around. Trekkers often spot grazing horses and local shepherd camps here. The campsite at Ali Bugyal offers mesmerizing sunset views and an incredible night sky.

The trail from Ali Bugyal to Patar Nachauni is relatively gradual and highly scenic. Trekkers continue walking across beautiful meadows while enjoying uninterrupted Himalayan views. According to local legends, Patar Nachauni is associated with mythological stories from ancient times. The route offers excellent photography opportunities with colorful landscapes and mountain backdrops. As altitude increases, trekkers experience cooler temperatures and changing terrain. The campsite is surrounded by rugged beauty and provides a peaceful environment for rest and acclimatization before moving toward higher elevations.

This is one of the most adventurous sections of the trek. The trail gradually becomes rocky and steeper as trekkers move above the tree line. Snow patches may appear depending on the season. During the climb, trekkers enjoy dramatic views of surrounding glaciers and Himalayan peaks. Bhagwabasa, situated at high altitude, serves as the final campsite before Rupkund Lake. The environment becomes colder and more rugged, creating a true Himalayan expedition feel. Proper acclimatization and hydration are important during this stage. Overnight stay in tents with an early dinner.

The summit day starts early in the morning before sunrise. Trekkers climb steep snow and rocky sections to reach the mysterious Rupkund Lake. The frozen lake and the famous human skeleton remains create a unique and unforgettable atmosphere. The breathtaking views of Trishul peak and surrounding Himalayan ranges reward the challenging ascent. After spending time at the lake, trekkers descend carefully back to Bhagwabasa and continue toward lower camps depending on weather and group pace. Trekkers can enjoy the changing landscapes once again while reflecting on the incredible Himalayan journey. The descent is comparatively easier and offers enough time for photography and relaxation. Upon reaching Lohajung, trekkers can celebrate the successful completion of the Rupkund Trek with fellow travelers and guides.
