The Chadar Trek is one of the most extraordinary winter treks in India, taking place on the frozen Zanskar River in Ladakh. Known as the “Frozen River Trek,” this adventure offers trekkers a unique opportunity to walk over thick sheets of ice surrounded by dramatic snow-covered mountains and deep canyons. Situated at an altitude of around 11,000 feet, the trek is famous for its extreme weather conditions, untouched landscapes, and thrilling experiences.
The word “Chadar” means blanket, referring to the sheet of ice that forms over the Zanskar River during peak winter. Temperatures can drop below -25°C, making this trek one of the toughest yet most rewarding Himalayan adventures. Trekkers pass through frozen waterfalls, icy caves, and remote Zanskari villages while experiencing the raw beauty of Ladakh’s winter wilderness.
The trek usually begins from Leh after proper acclimatization and continues through scenic campsites like Shingra Koma, Tsomo Paldar, and Tibb Cave. Chadar Trek is ideal for adventure enthusiasts seeking an unforgettable challenge and a once-in-a-lifetime winter expedition in the Himalayas.
Arrive in Leh, the capital of Ladakh, located at an altitude of around 11,500 feet. The first day is reserved for acclimatization due to the high altitude and cold weather conditions. Trekkers can relax at the hotel, explore nearby markets, and enjoy the beautiful views of snow-covered mountains. Proper acclimatization is essential to avoid altitude sickness before starting the Chadar Trek. A briefing session is conducted by trek leaders regarding safety measures, equipment, and trekking guidelines. Overnight stay in Leh with warm meals and preparation for the adventure ahead.
This day is dedicated to further acclimatization and final trek preparations. Trekkers can visit local monasteries, Leh Palace, and nearby attractions while adapting to the weather conditions. Trek leaders provide detailed instructions about walking on ice, using trekking equipment, and handling extreme temperatures. Participants check their gear, sleeping bags, and winter clothing to ensure readiness for the trek. Hydration and rest are strongly recommended. The day helps trekkers become physically prepared for the challenging frozen river expedition. Overnight stay at the hotel in Leh.
Drive from Leh to Shingra Koma, the starting point of the Chadar Trek. The route passes through scenic Ladakhi landscapes and frozen valleys. After reaching Shingra Koma, trekkers begin walking on the frozen Zanskar River. The experience of trekking on thick ice surrounded by towering cliffs is truly unforgettable. The trail includes icy surfaces, narrow passages, and beautiful frozen formations. Reach Tsomo Paldar campsite by evening and enjoy hot meals beside the frozen river. Overnight stay in tents under extremely cold Himalayan conditions.
Today’s trek continues deeper into the frozen Zanskar Valley. Trekkers walk across changing ice patterns and witness stunning frozen waterfalls along the route. The dramatic canyon landscapes and crystal-clear ice create a magical atmosphere. Depending on weather conditions, trekkers may need to navigate slippery sections carefully. Tibb Cave serves as a natural shelter and one of the most scenic campsites of the trek. The campsite offers breathtaking views of icy mountains and frozen riverbanks. Overnight stay in tents with warm dinner and essential rest.
The trek from Tibb to Nerak is considered one of the most beautiful sections of the Chadar Trek. Trekkers cross magnificent ice formations and narrow gorges while enjoying mesmerizing winter scenery. The highlight of the day is the famous frozen Nerak Waterfall, which appears like a giant wall of ice during winter. Trekkers also get opportunities to witness local Zanskari culture and traditional mountain settlements. The challenging terrain and freezing temperatures add excitement to the journey. Overnight stay at Nerak campsite surrounded by snow-covered cliffs.
After exploring Nerak, trekkers begin the return journey toward Tibb Cave. The return route provides another chance to admire the incredible frozen landscapes and changing ice formations of the Zanskar River. Walking back on the icy river requires balance and caution as weather conditions constantly affect the surface. Trekkers can capture stunning photographs and enjoy the peaceful beauty of Ladakh’s winter wilderness. Upon reaching Tibb Cave, participants rest and share experiences around the campsite. Overnight stay in tents with warm meals and support from the trek team.
The final trekking day takes participants back through the frozen river trail toward Shingra Koma. Trekkers descend carefully while enjoying the last views of the dramatic Zanskar Gorge and icy surroundings. Upon reaching Shingra Koma, a vehicle transfers the group back to Leh. The drive offers scenic mountain landscapes and a sense of achievement after completing one of India’s toughest winter treks. In Leh, trekkers can relax, enjoy hot meals, and celebrate the successful completion of the Chadar Trek. Overnight stay at hotel.
