The Buran Ghati Trek is one of the most thrilling crossover treks in the Indian Himalayas, located in the Pabbar Valley of Himachal Pradesh. Starting from Janglik, the trail gradually ascends through lush pine forests and beautiful campsites like Dayara and Litham. One of the major highlights is the serene Chandranahan Lake, believed to be the source of the Pabbar River.

The most exciting part of the trek is crossing the Buran Ghati Pass at around 15,000 ft, which often involves walking on snow and descending via a thrilling snow wall (rappelling may be required). After crossing, the landscape dramatically changes into barren and rugged terrain.

This trek is ideal for adventure seekers with some prior trekking experience. It perfectly combines scenic beauty with adrenaline, making it one of the most rewarding Himalayan treks.

Day 1: Shimla to Janglik

Drive from Shimla to Janglik, a picturesque Himalayan village that serves as the starting point of the trek. The journey takes you through winding mountain roads, apple orchards, and traditional Himachali settlements. As you ascend higher, the views become more scenic with lush green valleys and distant snow-capped peaks. Upon reaching Janglik, you will check into a homestay or camp and take time to relax after the long drive. The village offers a glimpse into local culture with wooden houses and warm hospitality. In the evening, meet your trek leader and fellow trekkers for a briefing session about the trek route, safety guidelines, and preparations. Enjoy a hearty dinner and rest well to prepare for the trekking adventure ahead.

Day 2: Janglik to Dayara Thach

Begin your trek from Janglik, gradually ascending through dense pine and oak forests. The trail is well-marked and offers a pleasant walking experience with occasional clearings that provide stunning views of the surrounding mountains. As you move higher, the forest opens up into beautiful meadows known as “Thach.” Dayara Thach is one of the most scenic campsites on this trek, offering vast green grasslands surrounded by towering peaks. The campsite is perfect for relaxing and soaking in the natural beauty of the Himalayas. You may also spot grazing sheep and local shepherds along the way. The gradual ascent helps in acclimatization, making it a comfortable trekking day. After reaching the campsite, set up tents, enjoy hot meals, and spend the evening under a sky full of stars.

Day 3: Dayara Thach to Litham

The trail from Dayara Thach to Litham is a delightful mix of meadows and forest sections. You will walk alongside streams and cross small wooden bridges, adding charm to the journey. As you progress, the landscape becomes more open, offering spectacular views of snow-covered peaks. Litham is a stunning campsite located in a wide valley surrounded by mountains and waterfalls. The peaceful environment and breathtaking scenery make it one of the highlights of the trek. Upon reaching Litham, take time to explore the nearby area and enjoy the tranquility. The campsite is ideal for photography and relaxation. This day also plays an important role in acclimatization before moving to higher altitudes. Enjoy a warm dinner and rest overnight in tents.

Day 4: Litham to Chandranahan Lake and back

This day is dedicated to exploring the beautiful Chandranahan Lake, a high-altitude glacial lake considered sacred by locals. The trek to the lake involves a steady climb over rocky terrain and snow patches, depending on the season. As you approach the lake, the scenery becomes more dramatic with snow-clad peaks and alpine surroundings. The crystal-clear waters of the lake reflect the sky and surrounding mountains, creating a mesmerizing view. Spend some time near the lake, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, and capture stunning photographs. After exploring, descend back to Litham campsite. This excursion also helps in acclimatization, preparing your body for the upcoming pass crossing. Overnight stay at Litham.

Day 5: Litham to Dhunda

Trek from Litham to Dhunda, which serves as the base camp for the Buran Ghati Pass. The trail gradually ascends through alpine terrain with fewer trees and more open landscapes. You will notice a significant change in scenery as you gain altitude, with snow patches becoming more frequent. Dhunda is a vast and open campsite located close to the pass, offering incredible views of surrounding peaks. This is a crucial day for acclimatization and preparation for the challenging pass crossing. The trek leader will brief you about the next day’s plan, including safety measures and techniques for navigating snow and steep sections. Rest well, hydrate properly, and prepare mentally and physically for the most adventurous day of the trek.

Day 6: Dhunda to River Camp via Buran Pass

This is the most thrilling and challenging day of the trek. Start early and ascend towards the Buran Ghati Pass, navigating through steep snow slopes and rugged terrain. Upon reaching the pass, you are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayas. The descent from the pass is the highlight, often involving a steep snow wall that may require rappelling or careful sliding under expert guidance. This adrenaline-filled experience is what makes the Buran Ghati Trek truly unforgettable. After descending safely, continue trekking towards the river camp located in a barren and rugged landscape. The contrast between the lush greenery before the pass and the stark terrain after crossing is remarkable. Overnight stay at river camp.

Day 7: River Camp to Barua Village

The trail from the river camp to Barua village is mostly downhill and relatively easier compared to previous days. You will walk through rocky terrain that gradually transitions into green fields and cultivated land as you approach the village. Barua is a charming village known for its apple orchards and traditional Himachali culture. Interact with locals and experience their way of life. The change in landscape and culture after crossing the pass makes this day very interesting. Upon reaching Barua, relax and enjoy the comfort of civilization after days of trekking. Overnight stay in homestay or guesthouse.

Day 8: Barua to Shimla

Drive back from Barua to Shimla. The journey offers scenic views of mountains, valleys, and rivers, giving you time to reflect on the incredible adventure you just completed. The Buran Ghati Trek leaves you with unforgettable memories of diverse landscapes, thrilling experiences, and breathtaking Himalayan beauty. Reach Shimla by evening, marking the end of the trek.
